David Wingo got his start writing music for films without even being aware of it.

After sending his childhood friend David Gordon Green some of the ambient drone music he had been working on at home, David was surprised to receive a copy of Green’s student film for that year in the mail which used one of the songs he had sent him. The song went hand-in-hand with the atmospheric images and evocative voice that Green was developing and a working relationship was born. Wingo composed original music for Green’s student film the next year and when Green made GEORGE WASHINGTON a year after graduating, he came back to Wingo to do the score for his first feature. David collaborated on the score for the low-budget but gorgeous feature with his friend Michael Linnen and the movie went on to become one of the most acclaimed movies of the year, winning numerous awards and quickly gaining a reputation as one of the more astounding debuts in modern American cinema. Since that time Wingo has worked with Green on eight of his other features.

He has worked with other acclaimed directors such as Jared Hess, Craig Zobel, and Margaret Brown and in 2012 he was nominated for the World Soundtrack Academy’s Discovery of the Year Award for his acclaimed score for Jeff Nichols’ award-winning TAKE SHELTER, which took home the Grand Prix prize at Cannes in 2011. David worked with Jeff again on his next feature MUD, which also premiered at Cannes and, upon its release in April 2013 to unanimously rave reviews, became the breakout indie hit of the year.  Wingo has continued to work with  Nichols and Green, most recently on Green's EXORCIST: BELIEVER (co-composing with Amman Abbasi) and on Nichols' forthcoming BIKERIDERS, starring Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, and Jodie Comer. Since moving to Los Angeles in 2017 Wingo has also s transitioned into television, having scored, amongst other things, FX's MAYANS MC, the Jim Carrey-led Showtime series KIDDING, and Bill Hader's much lauded and Emmy Award-winning HBO series BARRY. His work on the 2nd season of Barry received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music Composition For A Series in 2019.

Wingo also led the band Ola Podrida for over 10 years, mining his own particular brand of spacey, expansive folk-rock on three full-length albums. They toured the US and Europe multiple times, sharing the stage with the likes of Fleet Foxes, She & Him, Beach House, & Explosions In The Sky, as well as playing the now legendary All Tomorrow’s Parties music festival in England in 2008.
